John Devoy on RTE Nationwide
Local author John Devoy read from his acclaimed travel book “Quondam” which is an account of his epic bicycle journey across two continents. RTE Nationwide have made a short interview film which airs on 16th December at 7pm.
John Devoy grew up in the 1960’s, on the shores of Cork harbour. He studied medical laboratory science and worked in Cork University Hospital, Biochemistry Dept. until 1999. After several years of solo traveling, by bicycle, through the middle east and Africa, he returned to Ireland. A few years later he took the bold step of resigning from his ‘permanent and pensionable’ with the HSE, so set out on a new venture. Since 2000, he and his wife Sara have devoted themselves, assiduously, to building a successful organic farm enterprise from 6 acres of wilderness. He knows well what work is, knows vision, passion and the pitfalls and frustrations that accompany them. Thankfully he has always kept journals, always kept writing, always kept in touch with a core belief in the pursuit of both ideals and hard nosed realism. In recent times he has begun the process of stepping back from the farm to devote more time to writing.
On 21st Sept 2018, his first book ‘Quondam: travels in a once World’ was to be launched by his friend Dervla Murphy, in Uillinn, Arts Centre, Skibbereen. Due to illness on the night, Dervla was unable to make it but poet Anton Floyd did the honours!
Quondam is the first of a trilogy. The audio version of Quondam is also available.
He lives with his wife Sara near Rosscarbery, west Cork. They have three children, Oisín, Aisha and Meriel.
